Black vinyl-coated chain link blends into landscaping far better than bare galvanized wire.

Chain link is the most economical way to fence a large area. In Port St. Lucie a 4-foot galvanized chain link fence costs about $14–$22 per foot installed, a black or green vinyl-coated one about $20–$32 per foot, and a 6-foot commercial run about $22–$34 per foot. It is strong, quick to build and needs almost no upkeep.

Who chooses chain link

Dog owners on bigger lots, people fencing the back acreage on larger parcels west of the turnpike, and businesses that need a secure yard, storage area or construction perimeter. It is also a sensible choice along a rear line that nobody sees, paired with a nicer fence across the front.

Galvanized or coated?

Galvanized is the classic silver look and the lowest price. Vinyl-coated fabric in black or green, with matching coated posts, costs more but blends into a hedge or landscaping and tends to hold up better near salt air. Many HOAs that allow chain link only allow the coated kind, so check before you choose.

Adding privacy

Privacy slats woven through the fabric add about $6–$12 per foot and block most of the view. They are a cheap way to screen a pool equipment pad, a side yard or a storage area. A hedge planted along the fence does the same job more slowly.

How it goes up

Terminal posts at the ends, corners and gates are set in concrete and braced, the line posts are set between them, a top rail runs the length, and the fabric is stretched tight and tied off. A tension wire along the bottom stops dogs from pushing under. Gates up to drive width are standard. For a rolling or automatic gate, see gates.

Chain link fences: common questions

Is chain link allowed in my neighborhood?

In much of the original city it is. Many HOA communities in St. Lucie West and Tradition either ban it or allow only black-coated fabric. We check before quoting.

Can a dog dig under chain link?

Some will try. A bottom tension wire keeps the fabric tight to the ground, and for diggers we can add a buried wire apron along the line.

How tall can a commercial chain link fence be?

Commercial heights and toppings depend on the property's zoning, which is different from the residential rules. We confirm what applies before quoting.

Can you repair a chain link fence instead of replacing it?

Usually. Bent top rails, sagging fabric and broken ties are quick fixes. See fence repair.
